- During the modern era China was ruled by the Qing dynasty, this dynasty was ruled by Manchurian nomads.
- Qing rulers were not liked by the Chinese and were considered as foreigners because they came from Manchuria. As a cause of this, many of the Manchurian rulers adopted much of the old Chinese customs.
- The Manchurian people were the highest in social class while appointing local people to ruler of local regions.
- The Qing rulers brought back the examination system.
- Will be happen between the 1940’s and 1950’s the Chinese tried to abolish opium from the country but the British kept snuggling opium to the people and this cause a great decline in the economy.
- The boxer uprising in China occurred during 1896- 1901 this was a cause of the Chinese trying to get rid of all foreign intervention.
- By the modern era Japan became one of the most urbanized cities in the world with 10% of the population living currently in cities.
- The Taiping uprising happen in China in 1850 this was to get rid of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism for unique form of Christianity

- The Japanese were forced to open their ports due to the American delegation in 1853
- They were able to adapt rapidly to match with their Western competitors.
- The Opium Wars affected the Chinese government because most of Chinese silver was leaving China in order to gain opium. This caused inflation and disrupted the Chinese economy.
- The Opium Wars also cause high levels of unemployment and decreased efforts to work.
- Soon Japan was the only country out to the west to have an industrial revolution.

- The Taiping Rebellion tried to bring in a unique form of Christianity into China.
- Confucianism Buddhism was still a big part of the Chinese religion.
- The Manchus even adopted some of the confusion rituals into the country.
- Japan had many religions incorporated into it society such as Shinto, Buddhism and Christianity.
- During the Taiping Rebellion Hong Xiuquan believed to be Jesus’ younger brother and set out to cleanse the world of demons and establish peace.

- The Manchus preserved much of Chinese society.
- The Manchurians were at the top of the social classes. While women were still under the male figures and had lower class working jobs.
- Japanese started to adopt more of Western culture and became fascinated with it.
- Women in both Japan and China did not have much power and were seen under the males.
- There are many pleasant rebellions in China and as a sign of rebellion many of the males cut off their long braids that were a sign of submission.
- Since China had a growing population it was hard to keep up with food rations so the lifestyles of people started to become lower and lower.
- With the opium importations from England the lifestyles Chinese people we're not good because people got addicted to opium and we're not showing up for work or did anything around the house

Innovation, Intellectual, Inventions
- Japan started to modernize and borrowed a lot of ideas from Western culture.
- The Chinese reestablished the examination system.
- Due to the selective borrowing of Western culture the Chinese started to build factories and borrowed many Western weapons that were superior to the Chinese weapons.
- Educational encouragement in Japan caused people to become more literate and modernize the country.

Art and Architecture
- The Manchurian kept a lot of the Chinese art artwork and also used the old Chinese ways.
- They also started to begin to repair the palaces and important buildings in the Forbidden City. The repairs in the Forbidden City in were brighter and more elaborate than the older repairs.
- Many Manchurians built palaces in the north as Summer Palaces so they can escape the heat.
- Women also started to became portrayed in many Japanese and Chinese arts.

Near Geography
- China and Japan were both located in East Asia which bordered the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.
- Japan at one time also controlled both Korea and Taiwan influence both of the countries.
- The Qing dynasty shrank due to rebellion of the peasants and corruption of the government.
