Political:
· The set up of the political system of the United states is one of three different branches of government, Judicial, Executive, and Legislative, each with checks and balances on one another, and runs the government by officials elected by the people.
· The state structure is one of states. Each state has elected officials that run the state government and work with the federal government to use its law.
· The American Revolution was the reaction of the thirteen colonies to “taxation without representation” and a general dislike to the loss of autonomy to the British and thus revolted, beat the British and claimed independence.
· In a dispute over states rights and more importantly slavery and the life that goes along with it, the American Civil War broke out. The northern states represented the freeing of the slaves and the union as a whole, whereas the southern states represented slavery and states right. In the end the north won and restored the union to one whole and went about abolishing slavery.
· With the purchase of the Louisiana territory from the French, the idea of western expansion, expressed in manifest destiny, spread among the people and government that the United States should own all the land from “sea to shining sea”.

· From 1870-1900 the United States underwent a economic transformation marked by the maturing of the industrial economy, rapid expansion of big business, larger scale agricultural development, and arise in labor unions.
· With the technological out burst, the economy boomed, with large business rising and corporate America as well.
· A downside to this was that jobs went to fewer people as mechanization rose, and big business took over.

· Some of the people who came to America came so in search of religious freedom and to escape persecution.
· Most Americans identify as Christian or some other denomination thereof, but there is no one religion, with religious tolerance and separation of church and state being mostly present. This is a trend that continues to today.

Society:
· The women’s suffrage movement arose in the 19th century, and focused on gaining equality for women. This goal was later redefined to getting the vote for women, and was decide to be achieved by going state by state.
· The Emancipation Proclamation freed 3 million slaves with the 13th amendment officially ending slavery, the 14th giving former slaves equal protection under the constitution and the 15th grating voting rights.
· Although these provisions were often ignored or violated, the strong struggle for true equality had begun.

· The lightening rod was invented by Ben Franklin in 1752 and was used as a safe way to redirect lighting into the ground.
· Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1794, which allowed for easier picking of cotton and revolutionized the industry.
· Robert Fulton invented the steamboat in 1807, which could travel upstream from New York to Albany at 5 mph, allowing for other rivers to travel two ways.
· Samuel F.B. Morse invented the telegraph, which opened a new way of communication upon its invention in 1844.
